Zero Attracting PNLMS Algorithm and Its Convergence in Mean

چکیده
The proportionate normalized least mean square (PNLMS) algorithm and its variants are by far the most popular adaptive filters that are used to identify sparse systems. The convergence speed of the PNLMS algorithm, though very high initially, however, slows down at a later stage, even becoming worse than sparsity agnostic adaptive filters like the NLMS. In this paper, we address this problem by introducing a carefully constructed l1 norm (of the coefficients) penalty in the PNLMS cost function which favors sparsity. This results in certain zero attractor terms in the PNLMS weight update equation which help in the shrinkage of the coefficients, especially the inactive taps, thereby arresting the slowing down of convergence and also producing lesser steady state excess mean square error (EMSE). We also carry out the convergence analysis (in mean) of the proposed algorithm. Index Terms Sparse Adaptive Filter, PNLMS Algorithm, RZA-NLMS algorithm, convergence speed, steady state performance.

متن کاملAn Enhanced Set-Membership PNLMS Algorithm with a Correntropy Induced Metric Constraint for Acoustic Channel Estimation
In this paper, a sparse set-membership proportionate normalized least mean square (SM-PNLMS) algorithm integrated with a correntropy induced metric (CIM) penalty is proposed for acoustic channel estimation and echo cancellation. The CIM is used for constructing a new cost function within the kernel framework. The proposed CIM penalized SM-PNLMS (CIMSM-PNLMS) algorithm is derived and analyzed in...
متن کاملAn Improved Proportionate Normalized Least-Mean-Square Algorithm for Broadband Multipath Channel Estimation
To make use of the sparsity property of broadband multipath wireless communication channels, we mathematically propose an l p -norm-constrained proportionate normalized least-mean-square (LP-PNLMS) sparse channel estimation algorithm. A general l p -norm is weighted by the gain matrix and is incorporated into the cost function of the proportionate normalized least-mean-square (PNLMS) algorithm....
متن کاملProportionate normalized least-mean-squares adaptation in echo cancelers
On typical echo paths, the proportionate normalized least-mean-squares (PNLMS) adaptation algorithm converges significantly faster than the normalized least-mean-squares (NLMS) algorithm generally used in echo cancelers to date. In PNLMS adaptation, the adaptation gain at each tap position varies from position to position and is roughly proportional at each tap position to the absolute value of...
متن کاملA study of echo in VoIP systems and synchronous convergence of the μ-law PNLMS algorithm
A recent algorithm, the mu-law PNMLS, introduces a stepsize proportionate to the mu-law of the estimated tap coefficient to cancel sparse echo in telephony over packet-switch networks. It is derived by optimizing the following criterion: fastest convergence is obtained when all coefficients reach the vicinity of their target value at the same time. We present a study of synchronous convergence ...
